Reactions
In the past I have actually thought about how different people react to different things a lot. It blows my mind that even though the same thing could happen, no one’s reaction would be the exact same. It really all depends on how you were raised, what beliefs were instilled in you, your past experiences, and the surroundings you have lived in. Someone raised in the south in a conservative household where guns were glorified may have a different stance on the gun control issue than someone raised in the ghettos where they have seen multiple friends or family members killed because of this. This week in class, we read “Serving in Florida,” and in our mini socratic seminar we talked about how the author was a scientist, and went to Rockefeller University and got a degree there. None of her coworkers had an experience like that and even though this might have been a test for her, the people she worked with were stuck in the cycle earning minimum wage then not having enough money to achieve a lot of other things in life. We talked about how the author probably had money to fall back on, and these guys did not, and this was real life for them, like an eat or starve situation. This made me think how the choices the author was making were probably very different from her coworkers due to their difference in surroundings. Who you are is also a part of the reason why controversial topics have such a wide range of opinions, because of the difference in beliefs and what you have experienced in the past.
I love your post so much! The idea of our experiences shaping us - all in such a manner that no two people can ever be the same - is something that crosses my mind a lot, too. It's remarkable to think that even the smallest interaction or event might be the catalyst in changing our entire lives, that something we may consider to be insignificant or forgettable could be the reason we are who we are. What you said about Ehrenreich and her coworkers is so true; all of us have a tendency to judge someone based off of our first impression, but there's always something else going on that we just won't know.
