Plastic Surgery

When we think about plastic, we think fake. One good example of this is plastic surgery, where people pay to alter their physical appearances by inserting foreign objects into their bodies. Where people have a lot of money, this is considered the norm. A nose job or a boob job is common among wealthier people since they are able to afford procedures like these. Just like in “The Plastic Pink Flamingo: A Natural History,” when Jennifer Price talks about how “the plastic flamingo is a hotter pink than a real flamingo,” it shows how the fake things are often exaggerated and more noticeable. Perfection is naturally impossible, but could be achieved with unnatural influence. That’s part of the reason why so many people are becoming more unsatisfied with how they look, because all their idols they look up to, plastered everywhere on social media have all undergone procedures to make them appear as if they have no flaws. People will even go to the extremes and get things like their ribs extracted. This drives more and more individuals to go under the knife to acquire a similar look. The trend right now for women is a fuller bust, a thinner waist, and wider hips. If you go on a social media app like Instagram, I guarantee you’ll see at least one picture featuring a woman with naturally unachievable standards. These people become idolized, and plastic surgeons get more and more business, which would in turn cause them to promote straying from the measurements you were born with. No one ever thinks that what they have is good enough, the want for more, or what they can’t have, is always there.
