Judgement, Change and Women
Every day, starting from when you wake up to when you go to sleep you make countless of little judgements. They range from judgements of others all the way to judgements of yourself. No one likes to be judged, and we live in a world today where being different is supposed to be celebrated. Even so, out loud or in their head, if something is not normal, people will make judgements. Some people embrace different things and others feel threatened by it. An example of this is demonstrated by the women’s rights movement. When women started to realize how they were being treated was unfair, they set out to change this. Men all over the country reacted in a variety of different ways. Some supported the movement and some hated it with a passion. These men were threatened by the change it would cause in their everyday lives. They could not handle the thought of women going from being their subordinated to their equal and wanted to maintain the power that held them up to be a step higher on the social ladder of the country. The belief that women were not equal to men is so deeply ingrained in our country’s history it still shows today, centuries after the movement. In the essay “There is no Unmarked Woman” by Deborah Tannen, she writes about how women today are marked for every little thing they do, ranging from what they choose to wear all the way to the prefixes they choose to use. It’s still a little foreign, even today, for women to be of equal status to men. I think that’s what they are judged so much. Men have given the word “feminist” a negative connotation due to the fact that they feel threatened by the ideas behind the word. The tea is that in today’s world, most people have become more accepting of change, but there will always be those individuals that despise it.

It's so true how some people think feminism is hating men when its just about basic equality. I agree that people should start realizing that change can also be good, if we don't even try doing things differently we'll never know if things could've been better.
ReplyDeleteOMG I totally agree! Even though our society has claimed to change and wants to encourage uniqueness, it is impossible for people to stop their own inner judgement. I also love how you incorporated being a feminist as a negative connotation from a man's point of view; they do in fact see it as threatening to their sex when we're just trying to earn the rights that they've always had.
ReplyDeleteI love this post. Its really bizarre to me that people turn their nose up to things that aren't "normal". I mean, there are almost 8 billion people on the planet so why would we all be the same?
